Green Lantern

Wow.  I almost did not go see this in theaters.  I saw the bad reviews and let it go to my head.  Sometimes I forget that I am a forgiving movie watcher and like just about every freaking movie.  I also sometimes forget that aside from Ebert, there are not many movie reviewers that I trust.

I have no advice on how to like movies more, other than to go in with an open mind, and to get in line with whatever the movie is trying to do.  Are you going into "Green Lantern" looking for hardcore realism and gritty detective work?  Are you looking for a twisty and turny plot with deeply grounded scientific explanations?  You may need to adjust your expectations.  By nature of the source material, that was never going to happen.  The backdrop and explanations in "Green Lantern" are fancy, but it is really a straightforward tale between good and evil.

Hal Jordan, an irresponsible though extremely talented fighter pilot, has been chosen to join the Green Lantern Corps, a team of about 3600 members with the single purpose of protecting the universe.  Their powers take the form of mental projections fueled by an individual's willpower.  Never has this team been more necessary than now, when a life-force draining entity fueled by fear, known as Parallax, threatens the universe (and more importantly, EARTH).  Several fun subplots surround this bigger story, including a girl (there's always a girl), an infected human, and Jordan's own personal demons and fears.  The idea is fun and, ultimately, not overly complex.

The idea does not always have to be overly complex.  "Green Lantern" is an adventure movie, and I feel they truly were able to capture that feeling.  The effects were fantastic.  While I typically do not like so many CGI effects, there was not a whole lot of choice with this one, and they succeeded admirably.  I am curious about the 3D viewing experience and will probably go see it in that format when it hits the discount theater.

I was entertained from start to finish, with the ending sequences being particularly intense, impressive and fun.  Hurry up and go see it to increase the box office and ensure a sequel is made!

Not to worry, David. They planned out the sequel before this one was released.
